It says “Original sketch for a stained glass by Pierre Gaudin (Paris, France.) Price $350.00 New York 1952” and there’s a signature but I can’t tell what it says. I’m trying to find out what this painting is worth and if anyone has any information that could be useful I would really appreciate it.
Pierre Gaudin (1908–1973), son of Jean Gaudin (1879–1954) and grandson of Félix Gaudin (1851–1930) was a glass painter and mosaic artist. His studio executed mosaic designs and stained-glass windows for the Basilica of St. Thérèse, Lisieux
It's a picture of Saint Luke, one of the patron saints of artists, and the iconography is correct in that the saint is often shown painting images of Mary. Given the angularity of the lines, 1952 is not out of line for a date, but I would have guessed the other end of the '50s. Looks to be painted in gouache. I would guess the signature on the note is whoever wrote the note, not the artist. How big is it?
I purchased it at a yard sale , I was shocked at the price he was asking (100.00) knowing that over 75 years ago someone paid 350.00 for the painting... would you have any ideal where I might be able to sale the item and a potential price range it could bring?
Just cuz someone wrote $350.....doesn't mean it sold for that price..... and now.....it's in a yard sale for less than a 1/3 ! Times change....... but if the artist has / had a following....maybe u could look in that direction.
