Glass caviar?

Clearing my folks' estate, I found a gallon can nearly full of old marbles. At least a third are handmade of all sizes.

But mixed in were almost 8 oz (volume) of 3/8" translucent glass balls that look a bit like fish eggs, kind of a ginger ale color.

My guess is they go with some kind of wooden board game like Chinese checkers. (That game requires different colors.)

    Any ideas?

Hello @Dwd & welcome to the forum!!:happy:

We are going to need to see some photos of the marbles to really be able to give you any kind of useful information.

Here are instructions to upload your photos, please be sure to click "Full Size" on the little thumbnails, once loaded and before hitting "post":https://www.antiquers.com/threads/posting-a-thread-and-uploading-pictures.15990/

A quick tip on posting photos if you are using a smartphone... email them to yourself as 'medium' and it should resize them. Photos have to be under 1MB to post.

The "ginger ale color" ones could be a flower arranging aid.

Here ya' go. I trimmed it to exactly 1Mb.

They are as heavy as glass. I did not clean them. Some have the same dirt/clay on them that other, larger marbles in the can had. IMG_20240106_160404926~4.jpg

I'm going to say these are flower-arranging aids. Some might be discolored from sitting in the water.

Some folks on here can probably help you with the handmade marbles.

If you do decide to post some for ID I would suggest you start a new thread & put the words "handmade marbles" in the title so the right members see the thread.

Hmmm...I suppose you could use golf ball sized ones to keep your Christmas tree upright!

    Thanks!

This is off topic, but I'm at the moment watching AR on PBS and some kid had $1000's worth of mother of pearl buttons. There are metal boxes full of old buttons in my late mother's room. Something else to sort through.

There are folks on the forum who can help with old buttons also. ;):smuggrin:

You might be shocked by what a single marble or a single button could bring.:happy:
