I turned this over and from the back I first thought it was plastic but it’s glass.
4 cm tall including brass frame. Needed a scrub up. The clasp type is one I haven’t seen before but I’m thinking it’s maybe 30s/40s? Also is she just one of the pretty ladies @Bronwen? Thanks.

    Pretty!
I think you're spot on with your thoughts on this piece but can't wait to see what Bronwen says. :)
I'm wondering if that was a C-clasp that got bent the other way...? If the pin were to cross the back exactly horizontal, it would be over the flat area of the clasp, not in the current curved area.

Could be the case it does look a bit off in the alignment with the pin.
It does seem to function ok as it is though. Be interesting to see if anyone knows if it was something done for a while after the C clasps and turned out not to be very popular.

With the wheat in her hair I would say Ceres. Have you tried a UV light? I have a white glass one that glows from uranium.

If you choose to wear it as-is, I'd use a plastic/rubber earring back on the pin prior to engaging it in the clasp. With the opening of the clasp at the top, the pin would be more likely to slip out due to gravity.

This is a different glass Ceres than the one we usually see. That one is Czech, suspect this one is too. I would say late 20s into the 30s for this one.

The clasp is idiosyncratic, not anything we see repeatedly. Bluumz is right about gravity working against its staying put when worn. I think the clasp is as it always was. In order to lodge the pin stem into the clasp, do you have to push the pin up against resistance to clear the top of the hook? I.e., does the way the hinge is positioned relative to the clasp turn the pin/hinge assembly into a spring that pulls the pin downward when it is in the clasp?

I'm not seeing a good fit here, and those front retaining clips are ...offputting.

is this a costume cameo type item..? or just a low quality piece ?

Basically, a low quality costume piece, in fair condition for its age. Once upon a time it looked more like gold. I'm with you on the prongs.

I guess it's proper to show the full range of cameo products here..... if we're ever to learn !!!

Bronwen, it’s just a push down into the clasp area for the pin, the hinge seems loose and the pin doesn’t spring up. I suppose the metal clasp can be pushed down physically to make the pin more secure when in place but I think that would lead to metal fatigue if you did that a lot taking it off and putting it on. I expect quite a few of this design fell off when wearing. Thanks everyone, it’s not bad looking for a cheap piece and it only cost me £4 yesterday too.

Precisely. On my web site, where I can, I try to show a range of examples of a given subject, from master works to the barely recognizable, hand carved & mass produced. I have nothing against glass cameos. The French have made some that are quite beautiful.

I like the design. It's different! I have a small collection of costume cameos that I enjoy for how they were made or the aesthetically pleasing design. Plenty of expensive Art is made out of glass, plastic, and brass. ;)
