Not local enough. There's one jewelry store in another town, but the only way I can get decent money there is if it's in trade. Silver or gold for costume. I'd rather get the 50%. There are one or two more further out, but then you have to factor the dumb body (mine) into the equation and whether i have to time to go that far. Both of the latter are a flat "no".

To be fair eBay takes 12-14% on most categories. I agree you need go find a better refiner though. Even if you’re happy with 50-60, I think you’d be much happier with 80-90.

edit: I’ll pay you 50% and I’ll send you a prepaid label. Just measure and weigh box and send me the details. I know offers to buy aren’t allowed here but this is also not a serious offer. Only because op just said she doesn’t want to ship. Otherwise it is real. More of a push/urge to find a better deal for her sake.

Shipping precious metal is begging for it, so...(LOL) Actually, eBay SAYS they take 12-14%. Add in what they take/steal from shipping, take on top of the sales tax, and extort for "promotion" and you can hit 30% or worse on some things in short order.

So I finally took these pieces, and three small .925 butter knives, to a local scrapper that another dealer at the antique mall recommended:

    $586.44 on a $28 investment!

    Let's go!!

Thanks to all the members here who have helped me learn to know what the heck I'm doing.

Not when you add in the Promotion fees and what they scalp from your shipping costs. 30% is more realistic, especially if you sell jewelry.

Have the buyer pay for shipping.

Yes but no matter who pays for shipping, the seller pays a percentage of the shipping cost. So that has to be factored in.

Example: Item plus shipping = $100. Buyer pays shipping, but so what? EBay charges 15% of $100, not 15% of the item price. Subtract the fees and shipping charges and the "promotion" fee and you can easily hit 30%. If not more.

They jacked up fees on ALL jewelry to pay for the "Authenticators" no one ever asked for or needed, and that most sellers can't access anyway. They're only used for fine jewelry and not all of that. Meanwhile, someone selling piles of Chico's or Paparazzi has to pay it too. Add in that and a 10% "promotion" fee so that some buyer can find your item without it being buried under 90 irrelevant listings and you can easily end up losing money based on fees alone.

Now you know why eBay has fewer sellers than they used to, or one reason anyway. If you can't get your merch for pennies the rate of return doesn't even hit minimum wage. Better off working fast food.
