    Hello, friends-
I acquired a little 19th century painting on porcelain, the one here with the pretty gypsy girl. Frame size is 4" by 3-3/8". The back appears to be made of corduroy cloth. I'm looking for opinions as to whether I should take it apart to look for marks on the back of the porcelain. I'd rather not disturb its original setting but I'd love to know if there are marks on the back. What is the likelihood, do you think, that the back will be marked? Any thoughts will be appreciated. You could find a KPM mark, its very nice. I would carefully remove the tacks to have a look, you can soon replace them in the same holes.

If that's an actual original painting (and not some kind of 19th century photo-mechanical reproduction/transfer),it's a real beauty.
    Def deserves further investigation.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

And the artist on @Bronwen's link is 'Unbekannt Unbekannt', i.e., "Unknown"

"An Oval Continental Plaque of a Young Woman (porcelain) by Unbekannt Unbekannt."

I looked at the image a bit longer, and harder....I'm not positive if what I've surrounded with the square, and it's pointing at the location, is Initials and what looks like 91 or 97 in the shadow of the frame there............it's faint, and slightly pixelated, but there! At least I see it! T'would be nice if what looks like 3 initials were clearer, BUT!! Was all I could find, and couldn't clarify it better........Maybe if OP could put a loupe on it??

I have seen things of this sort - hand paintings on porcelain that are copies of an existing work - both with the signature of the actual craftsman who did the porcelain & with the name of the original artist.

Thanks for the intelligent discussion. That is certainly our girl. I removed it from its setting. There are no artist's marks...a loupe didn't reveal anything. See the label on the reverse? I don't know the language or the meaning of the words. There is an impressed 15 below the label. Above the label is a faint circle which may mark the outline of another label, now lost. Any thoughts, my friends? DSCN6218.JPG DSCN6219.JPG DSCN6220.JPG DSCN6221.JPG DSCN6222.JPG

Better quality photographs would be helpful. I see "Ligourian Girl" in French. And artist Hecko.

Hioke? I think I see a capital Z on the first name (I see a faint cross line on the main stem). But I can't tell for sure from the photo. KPM did make porcelain plaque blanks but Hutschenreuther (spelling?) made many, too. Seemed mainly German factories that produced them.
