I see her as looking serious & intent. If that is a strap running across her torso, then, even without a crescent moon, think we can call her Diana/Artemis.

What I see at first is probably what you see too, something that seems not to have been anyone's name ever. My very first reaction was that it was Lamant, then of course saw that it wasn't. These are the really exasperating ones, the ones that looks so legible until you try to read them.

She has a properly divine form. Those little toes too!

I love the braid detail. Signature is so close to something! Best I could find was "Lamanon" as a French town but that last letter looks more m or w than n unless it's a Schmoll-like florish.

I love when the artist makes the extra effort to put a little divot in. I do love a pretty boy.

I was seeing it as M, then occurred to me it could be lower case NI. This insight did not get me anywhere.

I was wondering what 'thrusts' were. ;)

'Lamanoni' seems to occur only in the discarded name of a type of marine snail.

Here's a new case to mull over.

This Roma belongs to me & seems to be quite clearly signed 'Cosatt'.

In the fullness of time, this Madonna della Segiola turned up on eBay:

    Cosatt Madonna.jpg Cosatt Madonna signature.jpg

This also appears to say 'Cosatt' or 'Cosatti' in one of komo's childish scrawls.

Then the Graces came tripping along:

Cosatti Graces A.jpg Cosatti Graces B.jpg

This looks even more like 'Cosatti'. (It also has that mysterious notation that I call 'Ann', just to give it a name, which turns up now & then.)

Was Roma trimmed after being signed & the 'i' lost? Are these 3 signatures all from the same hand? What say ye?

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

I'd say the madonna is sublime....& that any woman would turn into a Lady wearing the 3 graces !!!

as for the siggys....... I'm to young to comment seriously !

I found Cosatti on page 292, under the heading Incisori:

Perhaps the first was trimmed. I think the first two could have been carved by the same person. They are both excellent. The third I suspect may have been a piece from the jewelry store Cosatti had, made for a less affluent clientele by an assistant, but signed to identify the shop from which it came. It looks as if the signature on the third cameo was accomplished with the help of a straightedge.

On the Roma: the treatment of the shield is so rudimentary, you have to wonder if there was more than one hand involved.

I looked for both of those to no avail. Also tried Larnanoni and the like, no luck. I will keep looking.

Wonder what it meant about your stature among cameo cutters if you moved your studio to via Babbuino with so many of the others.

Quite possible, maybe even probable, that an apprentice was involved in the simpler bits. There are versions of this image that give her a fancier shield.

I can't stand it, I turned it off on all my devices!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Mine is turned off, too. All typos are my own!

This one is a puzzler. I agree yours probably meant to have the "i" to be a recognizable name. I love the wolf detail on the helmet, with the upper strata used so well.

The other two do not share the same skill of carving, but are most alike in signature style (the hooks on the c and a, the gapped t, the cursive). I'm wondering if it was a family business, or apprenticeship as was suggested.

The "Ann" notation makes me crazy. I've seen some renditions where it looks more like a Ce... and it often has that "O" shape as on this one. It's also always much smaller than the signatures, which are varied. I'm thinking it must be the jeweler who set the pieces, or the store that sold them. It's usually on pieces much better carved than this one.

I hate it, but I also got addicted to the "predictive swipe" in texting on my old phone (I'm too old to learn to touch type as fast as The Kids). My next phone had that feature, but ONLY if auto-correct was also on. It is the absolute worst. I will type out the words I want and it will wait until I'm 3 words away to auto-correct it to something nonsensical. When it's not replacing things with curse words....apparently it's learning from me. :muted:
