    Hello all,

I found this painted dish in the Netherlands at a flea market.

It is pretty large, about 40cm in height.
To me it looks like oil paint, but I am not sure.

No maker's mark but I have attached pictures of the bottom. Any idea on the age and maybe also origin?

    Thank you! DSC_4167.JPG DSC_4167.JPG HORIZON_0001_BURST20231222161410156_COVER.JPG DSC_4166.JPG DSC_4164~2.JPG HORIZON_0002_BURST20231222161419369.JPG HORIZON_0002_BURST20231222161410156.JPG

There appears to be something impressed on the bottom. What does it read?

Unfortunately those seem just random/unintentional marks, or at least nothing reads out of them. They have no shape to them, what is visible in the picture is exactly how they look even up close in person, just dips in the material.

But I don't have it in front of me right now and as I am a beginner, it is completely possible I missed something. Maybe more knowledgeable people can make something out of what seem like random shapes.

I will be able to have a second look and take clearer pictures at the beginning of January, so I might return with an update post :) thank you

I think that's a maker's mark. Illegible to me, but a good, clear close-up might reveal something.

I enhanced the detail of the picture and yes you are right, I am pretty sure they are indeed letters.

I only got one short look at the item but still pretty dumb that I dismissed it, should've investigated it up close more.

I hope when I get a second look at it, we can figure it out. Thank you everyone.

Do you mean 40cm in diameter?

As they were added, one would have to assume the marks are there for a reason.

I get PAT. as the 1st 4 characters in the upper of the 2 RH lines...barely.

Yeah, of course. My previous message was just to say that because of inattention and little time to observe the item, I thought they were random marks due to signs of wear or damage in time, as the entire bottom is a bit worn out. I did not know they were intentionally added until now. Thank you for the help! I will come with an update in a few weeks.

In the meantime, why don't you post a good quality close-up photograph of the impressions taken in better lighting?

I see there's more in the blurry mess than a blurry mess, but can't read it.

That would be a good solution, but I don't have access to this item anymore right now and these are all the pictures I took. I will in a few weeks, so that's why I said I would update then.

I think the mark might be Watcombe Torquay plus a code number off to the side.

Definitely this. Some were decorated at the factory, but often outside it, including by amateurs. Something along the same lines here:

I should have known that, it’s typical Watcombe. The mark is upside down, but once you know!

    The OPs mark. Decipherable indeed.
