Hi from Florida. My wife just moved into my house, so the plastic Home Depot kitchen table has to go, along with the tools in the dining room and the $80 Chinese headboard from Amazon. We are trying to pick up a few things to turn the house into a fairly traditional home. I am from Appalachia. My relatives looted nearly all the good stuff when my grandparents died, so we are buying things here and there to create a similar atmosphere.

    Thanks for the forum.

Thank you for joining us. And what a wonderful project -- turning a house into a home.

I got very little. Two kerosene lamps, my great-grandfather's flintlock shotgun, a really awful aluminum .22 pistol, a couple of whiskey jugs, and some other minor items. My aunt stole my great-grandfather's gold watch, which was supposed to go to me, and God knows what else. I am told her son has the watch.

My sister stole a bunch of ancient photos from the family and then abandoned them in the house she used to live in, so I ended up with those without trying. No one has shown any interest in recovering them from me, perhaps because they are not worth anything.

My revenge is buying better things than the ones my relatives took.

Anyone who fails to make a list of items to leave to relations is inviting disaster. People will happily destroy their relationships with relatives in order to get a few pieces of mid-grade heirloom furniture and unremarkable jewelry. You find out what you mean to other people when a grandparent dies without proper estate planning.

    Hello! :)
I've just signed up and have a very specific question (which I shall search the forum for an answer first) but with a general interest in all things antique.
My husband is a collector of silver (mostly flatware which is cluttering up my cutlery drawer! One day I'll organise it!)

It's a High Standard Double Nine. We used to shoot a semiauto High Standard and a Colt Woodsman, but those mysteriously vanished, along with his Colt Model 1903, two S&W .357 revolvers, Marlin lever action...

Gramps was a circuit judge, and a lot of guns taken from criminals found their way into his house.

the semi auto is a loss.......classic target shooter

the 99 was popular , good gun for the money !

    too bad about the 1903........
    criminals u say...!!

In addition to lawful owners, many gangsters of the pre-World War II era favored the Model 1903 and Model 1908 because they were relatively small and easily concealed. It is said that Al Caponekept one in his coat pocket and Bonnie Parker used one to break Clyde Barrow out of jail after smuggling it into the jail by taping it to her thigh. Bank robberJohn Dillinger was carrying this model of pistol when he was shot by FBI agents outside the Biograph theater on July 22, 1934, and another famous bank robber, Willie Sutton, had one when he was captured by police in Brooklyn on February 18, 1952.[3]

Family huh.......what can ya do ??:inpain:

I would like to have a 1903. Seems like the kind of pistol every gangster would carry in his suit pocket, in an Art Deco universe stuck in the time between the wars.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I collect antique photos, and also do genealogical research, so... even with little monetary value, the photos you describe may have historical and genealogical value.

I'm a little late, but... welcome to Antiquers!
