    DSC_4140.JPG DSC_4138.JPG Hello,

I bought this from a thrift store in the Netherlands and I would like to know more about it. Is anyone able to tell how old it is approximately?

    No marks on the back.

A look at the back might provide a clue to the date. Manufacturing processes can change over time.

    It doesn't look modern.

I agree, it looks like it is antique, and older than 19th century.
Pity you can't take it out of the frame, because the thickness says a lot about the age.
It think it is 17th century, but can't be 100% certain.

Thank you so much to both of you!

I managed to get it a bit out of the frame to show the thickness, not sure how helpful it is in finding out more.

And thank you for that page with various fish on tiles, it is very helpful!

(I also have to clean the tile :D)

Great, can you measure the thickness? Preferably in mm?

Yes, a bit awkward to measure in the contained position but I believe it is 8mm

Thanks, in that case it is likely to be 18th century.

What a lovely find. AJ-Do you see many genuine 17th-18th century tile for sale in the Netherlands ? I imagine most would be reproductions.
In Portugal looters are yanking old Azulejos off buildings for resale.

I see many tiles for sale. Dutch homes and farms used to have much of the wall surface covered with tiles, so when a building is demolished thousands of tiles become available in one go.
Many tiles are bought to be used in restoration projects, others are sold to collectors as they are, often with cement stuck to the back. Some are framed and sold as decorative items, like this one.

My parents had a nice antique tile collection, of which I kept two featuring sailboats. You can't get more Dutch than sailboat tiles.;) I haven't found the right frames for them yet.
I have a set of four antique azulejos which I bought in Lisbon, together they form one motif. Mine were sold legally.

I'm familiar with the Delft style tiles that resemble this with the decorations being fired on. Is it common as in this instance for the decoration to be added after the tile was glazed and fired?
