Mezzo ritratto georgiano a pastello in cornice dorata contemporanea, firma indistinta
    Thanks to everyone

"Good morning everyone, I'm new to the forum and I'm Italian so forgive my English. I recently purchased a pastel painting. This was the seller's description:

Georgian pastel half portrait in contemporary golden frame, indistinct signature
A beautiful portrait in good condition although there is a small hole in the portrait but hardly visible (visible in the photo)
The frame has some cracks which appear to have been repaired in the past but are stable and do not compromise the quality of the object.
    Frame measurements: 60cm x 35cm x 8cm
My question is: do you think it's original and how old could it be? Is it really Georgian era?"

Welcome, Wellacipolina. Is the glass it is under convex? We would like to see the signature, even if difficult to read. The hardware on the back used to hold the string is unusual. It would be good to have a close up photo showing the detail of one of the attachments.

Except in monetary terms, I don't think it matters much whether it was painted in Georgian times, or yesterday. I think it is lovely.

A very pretty child, and it does look like a pastel portrait, but putting a date on it may be difficult. There aren't a lot of clues in the image that strike me as being date specific. An assessment of the paper on which the drawing is done may be your best hope of getting a date. (and there might be something written on the back)

    Welcome, Wellacipolina.
She is delightful and good quality. The wide neckline of her dress, almost a straight line, with bare shoulders, is more mid 19th century in my opinion.

The bare shoulders are an issue.

This portrait by Greuze was painted c1775, but the bare shoulders aren't due to the cut of the clothing:

This portrait of Lady Augusta Wellington is c1837. It shows a dress cut to reveal the shoulders, but, even if trimmed to just head and shoulders, the hair treatment would still be an indicator of date:

    grazie a tutti
