Agree with Ruth, baking soda can do the job, also any kitchen oven cleaner, from my experience.
To me it also looks like bakelite.
The spider is so cute! I like both amber and spiders, so just perfect combination. :joyful:

And thanks for the soda suggestion! I'll grab some and see what happens.

Nice pics, Rachel. The first mark is likely to be the maker, but unfortunately the blobby tree(?) next to 925, which could tell us the origin, is a mystery to me.:(

Yes it is, but I don't recognize the general shape either.
The only similarity I can find is to 18th century marks, and your spidant is certainly not 18th century.;)

It almost has to be one of the Baltic countries, but that's not a Polish mark and I don't know the rest.

I don't recognize it as Russian, Latvian, Estonian or Lithuanian either.
Finland, Sweden and Denmark are also on the Baltic, but it isn't one of theirs either.

Germany has a stretch of Baltic coast east of Denmark, and they also have an extremely long history of making amber jewellery. They don't have legally binding hallmarks, they can use any mark they choose, as long as the fineness is as marked. So it could be German.

Goodness, didn't think it'd be a little mystery! I'm sure it'll turn up one day. German is an interesting shout! I didn't know that. :D

@RachelW I think I found another like your miniature in this listing. Now I'm wondering who she is....French, that bonnet. What woman not of Royal standing would have multiple wearers? The only one I could think of was Charlotte Corday and weirdly she looks similar??? Definitely needs more research but I'm intrigued.

As am I! What an interesting turn of events. Looking at this profile portrait, its definitely the same nose.
But there's also a resemblance to Madame Necker and even Madam Elizabeth...
    Much to dive into!
