    You didn't ask, so maybe you already know, but one scene is Orpheus playing* his lyre to get around Cerberus so he can rescue Eurydice from the Underworld. The other is either Ariadne abandoned on Naxos or Dido abandoned by Aeneas.

    Is there just one scene on each vessel?

    * Well, maybe thinking about throwing it at them.

    Hm. Brownfield did a lot of this classical motif stuff. Pratt is a possibility too. Or even Minton.

    yes those are the ones that you linked to above. I was quite suprised they went for so much as they are unmarked and was wondering if anyone knew how to identify them or otherwise what makes them so special.

    Hello Bron: I was not at the auction in person so I only see the pictures that you see on the link. It certainly seems like one of them was drilled but I really have no idea. Good catch.

    all or most of the mid 19th cent Pratt stuff seems to be marked. Why arent these?

    I’ve had a lot of unmarked Pratt, including stuff with only a diamond registry mark.
