Mystery plaque

This 4 x 5” plaque must commemorate something that happened at Washington Navy Yard on Sept 7, 1933. I can’t find anything,

September 7, 1933 (Thursday) As the uprising in Cuba continued, the United States dispatched 16 destroyers to the island nation, bringing to 30 the number of U.S. Navy ships prepared to bring an invading force.

Thx, I’d say possible but unlikely. The Wash. Navy Yard itself didn’t have ships to send, wouldn’t really have been involved in the Cuba thing. But I wish it was the answer.

 

What did they do there? Anything to do with artillery?

 

Until 1960’s most of that place was “The Naval Gun Factory.”

 

So maybe the debut of some bigger, better gun?

 

Possible, but I’d bet more on an official visit by some dignitary. Checked FDR, wasn’t he. Sec of Navy? Dunno.

 

400th. Birthday of Queen Elizabeth 1. True but that’s not the answer.

 

FDR was there in 1933, according to the internet, but not on that date.

You've probably seen THIS history of the Washington Navy Yard in your searches but, during 1933, as you said, nothing really notable seemed to occur.

 

Thx, no hadn’t seen, looks like the place was all but closed in ‘33. There are thousands of photos from those years, and they didn’t think to put one in that text!

 

Maybe it's just a retirement gift.
