Hallmark -- England Sheffield 1876??

Can members review the hallmark on a bangle/bracelet please and confirm the assay and if possible identify the maker's mark please.

I can not confirm that's from Sheffield, or 1876, or even England !

maybe someone else can..... but I have my doubts..

 

Date letter J and the bangle style looks right for 1876, I can’t really make out the rest of the marks except for the 18.

 

I don't see a lion assay or any British hallmarks? I see a STAR may be and that would be more in the lines of Italy?

 

Ditto. And it does seem to have the Sheffield crown as well.

I think it is the crown for Sheffield, but I agree it looks a bit like a star.

I don't know much about gold marks in England. Maybe @silvermakersmarks does?

 

Do hope Phil (silvermakersmarks) checks in, but while the marks are a bit fuzzy to these old eyes, and can't make out the mark or marks on the right, which look like there might be an overstrike or double-struck (again, old eyes here), but I'm seeing some issues. While the crown would be an English gold mark (if Sheffield would also have a rose), the 'C18' is not one I'd expect to see if English, also 'J' is an uncommon English date letter and to the best of my knowledge, Sheffield didn't assay gold until the early 20th century, and I can't seem to see a maker's mark. Will say I've seen similar marks on Maltese gold...

I'm with Cheryl on this. That isn't any kind of Sheffield crown. I also think that it might read 918 rather than C18.

According to assayoffice.co.uk:
"The Crown was used by Sheffield Assay Office to mark silver from 1773 until 1973. In 1903, when Sheffield was also allowed to mark gold as well as silver, the Rose was added as a gold mark... After 1903, when Sheffield was finally allowed to assay and mark gold as well as silver (the result of a clause in the Sheffield Corporation Act), Sheffield had two town marks - the Crown for silver and the Rose for gold. " Previous to 1903, I believe they would have had to send any gold pieces to London for an assay mark. Of course, abuses to the system abounded and unregistered marks were sometimes used.
The J was used on Sheffield silver in 1876, but not gold. And as others have said, there is no Sheffield rose mark... though I can't make out at all what the blob is to the right of the crown/star.
Wondering why the OP has attributed the bangle to Sheffield?

Yes, that is a proper crown, like the British crown. Maybe from the British period.
The other 'crowns' look like the mark I have on my Maltese earrings. I always thought it was a fortress (like Valetta and other Maltese towns) with five turrets. Maybe my romantic soul, I could be totally wrong.

I think they are Maltese. The bangle has an 8-pointed cross engraved on it but i Was not sure. I may have to research the assays from Malta
