Featured Translation needed on a Hoshiarpur table

The first part of the translation is a common phrase known as the "Basmala/Bismillah", and occurs at the beginning of each chapter ("surah") of the Qur'an - Arabic: بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ, bi-smi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmi.

The second part of the translation is related to the "shahada", or profession of faith - "[There is no God but God, and] Mohammed is his messenger". After saying the name of Mohammed, it is common to recite some form of "salawat", such as "peace be upon him", or "may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him".

I think the label or remnant of one is still on there, LOL! I'll take a look. Thank you for all your great information. The stand is in much better condition than the table. I would have thought that my grandmother would have bought them at the same time, but I don't know for sure.

 

You are quite right! It does say Made In British India!

 

The table might have the same label, if that is the case then it's also pre 1947 and will be ivory. Just because it's not as ornate as the table I've posted it doesn't mean it's not worth money, pre 1947 hoshiarpur is always worth money, clearly the more decoration the better.

 

Well, call me surprised because we (the family) thought they were not valuable at all. Glad I kept some of my grandmother's stuff -- I've always told my kids that there is a dollar or two in my clutter!

 

I have finished the restoration, I had a lot on but managed to finish it a few days ago.

I think London, England, was called London first from the Roman Londinium, see we are all at some stage victims of the most powerful throughout history. What the indigenous people of England called it before I expect we will never know, and as a Londoner for 41 years I don't want to rename it, nobody will know where you mean.

 

It was about the dirtiest and poorly treated antique I've ever restored, clearly the previous owners didn't know what it was.

No, I live in a very lovely place called Victoria, BC. Kent is my surname and it's quite possible that my husband's family were, at some point in the past, from Kent. His great-grandfather emigrated from England. I have been to various parts of England but not Kent. I've heard parts are quite beautiful.

 

Kent is called 'the garden of England'.

 

And Victoria is called "the garden city."
