Featured Carnelian gold ring

I was wondering who is on the ring and how old it may be, also no mark on gold.

 

Nice ring. First third of the 19th century would be my best guess. Don't recognize the gent. The laurel wreath can indicate a hero, nobility/royalty, or someone touched by Apollo with a gift in the arts.

He seems to be wearing a toga, so maybe Roman. Although royalty does dress up in the fanciest ways sometimes.

I thought Roman also.......and he seems a notable figure, but unless he's Darius Honkerous Maximus ....I couldn't find a likeness !!

 

I'm going to say William III as seen here by Wedgwood. An English ring should have hallmarks if gold, but maybe they're worn or it was set elsewhere.



Laurels on royalty were A Thing when they were all crazy about Ancient Rome and emulating it. His hair is a bit long to match most Roman emperor 'dos. Wedgwood did a lot of royal portraits so checking out the holdings in the British Museum, V&A, The Met, etc. are a good cheat sheet to all those profiles.

Ring Guy's jaw doesn't seem strong enough to me for William, but it's this sort of thing. Someone being glorified by comparison with a Roman emperor.

Yes, it could.

 

Ring guy seems sparing in his depiction in general with not the most spot on anatomy so I looked for nose, longer hair, and laurels. It's always a guess though!

I'm so used to antique American precious metals having almost nothing and in jealously of countries that had/have a marking system so it's go to know some British gold doesn't have marks.

 

Hallmarks didn’t really become nigh on universal on jewellery until, oh, after ww2. Mediaeval and Georgian stuff isn’t marked, and even Victorian stuff often isn’t, or simply has purity marks, such as 9 ct.
