    do u have a pipe.....can you get a couple?
I'd be pretty interested to see how a pipe...or several would sit in this stand...

I'm afraid I don't have any. And on second thought, it's probably too small for a pipe rack.

I'm with Johnny on this one. I think -- because Victorians had specific utensils for everything -- that it is a holder for something with a handle.

If it was for pipes it would have, I would think, been for a lady's pipes which would have been of a more slender size.

I looked around for a spoon holder example because I thought along the same line. However, I never did see any type of example of one made like this one.

@DragonflyWink - In your years of collecting sterling spoons have you ever seen or heard of a porcelain spoon holder in a shape like this one?

Eh, have seen somewhat similar in silverplate spoon holders, but with slots rather than round holes, and not in porcelain - personally, it looks to me like a toothbrush holder, the center well and smaller ones at bottom useful for drips. Not sure how old this piece is perceived to be, but will say that toothbrush holders and wall racks in various forms and materials were common from the late 19th century, they were often part of porcelain commode sets, most often a sort of tall cup or vase type, or a long tray or box with supports for air-flow.

Not really like the OP's, but some old toothbrush holders:
