Featured Japanese Imari Style Plate

    Just wondering if anyone have any information about this plate. Im still new and learning. Plate is 35cm in diameter. :) imari1.jpg imari2.jpg imari3.jpg

    It's more likely Arita given the style and potting. The multi spur points on the foot and the form of the foot rim is generally indicative of 3rd quarter of the 19thC. The pattern on the back is a karakusa.

    Karakusa is a word I haven't heard before. Does it mean this particular design, or just any design on the back?

    It means Chinese Plant - and it's like an Eastern equivalent of acanthus (an often used design on ceramics), a stylised plant form. Although the name is 'Chinese' it is most commonly seen on Japanese works.
