Featured Information on this pin/brooch please

Hi guys.

Any information about this pin/brooch will be greatly appreciated. I bought it with other jewelry pieces at a thrift store in Pretoria, South Africa - my hometown.

Looks 1930s-40s. It is a so-called flying boat, but I don't know which one.

Beautiful pin.The most famous flying boat was of course Pan Am's China Clipper.Another example was Howard Hughes 'Spruce Goose'.We had the opportunity to walk thru Hughes' plane,it's extraordinary-like an Indiana Jones movie set.

 

Think the use of plastic instead of metal for the hinge attachment indicates war time or, I would guess, for a time after.

Just as extra info, these badge style brooches were popular in the UK in the 70's, often came from petrol station promotions - I used to collect them. There were planes, boats, trains etc. Not certain this is one, but does have a lot of resemblance.

 

The Spruce Goose used to be in my hometown, Long Beach, California where it made its only flight in 1947. They built a dome to house it and made it into a tourist attraction. It fell out of favor and in 1993 went to McMinnville, Oregon where it is housed now in an aircraft museum.

 

Kiko-I saw it in McMinnville Oregon. Sitting right next to & below it is a much smaller (much sleeker) Nighthawk Stealth Bomber-the first stealth fighter.Both machines are extraordinary.
PS-Hope to get down to Long Beach & tour the Queen Mary someday.You folks look like you've got some pretty tasty charity stores too !

Way cool. You were right near me and didn't visit? Oh, that must have been before we met. Long Beach isn't much of a tourist town. You already hit the high spots.

PS-Loved our Discovery Shop in Santa Rosa & then in Portland,both closed during Covid.
