Antonio Zeno Shindler copy or not?

Hi Everybody!

Had such luck with my last posting (thanks Debora!), decided to ask the community about this one.
So, got this painting at a flea, it is definitely hand painted and old (judging by the back, mid-late 19th century), unsigned. It's is 17" x 23.5". I quickly did a look up, and google provided me with a very similar work by Antonio Zeno Shindler "Sunset Landscape with Native Americans." So, I decided it's a copy of a famous work and was done with it.

After a few months now, I'm starting to think about it, the scene is not exactly the same, the work I found online has two Native American men by a canoe, this one has what looks to be a love triangle, a European man running after a Native American woman that's about to get into a canoe. And the artist died in 1899. So, the work is very similar, but not the same, and also old. Do you think it's possible that it's another version of the scene by the original artist? And would it be reasonable to assume that someone copied it around the same time it was first painted, maybe displayed somewhere and someone actually copied and added to it, and in oil?
It is nicely painted, so I'm confused here

What are your thoughts?

There do appear to be similarities in the scenery.

 

I'm inclined to think neither of these is "the original" but one is definitely a copy of the scenery of the other.

 

Or else, artists painted the scenery in real life, from the same view point.

Shindler seems to have signed his works with initials or a monogram - some version of AZS, or ZS - in the lower left corner. So you may want to closely examine your painting in that area. He worked in a variety of mediums, watercolor and gouache on paper, oil on board, and oil on canvas (sometimes mounted on board), in addition to being a photographer

Both works employ what is called a Claudian landscape. But even within that compositional format, the scenery is quite similar.

Yep, they definitely have a very similar classical setting, even to the location of rocks and trees.
Indeed, very interesting bio, "extermination of his family in a vendetta" sounds pretty horrid.
