Framed with glass. The ‘outer’ frame looks newer but everything els looks antique (well everything but the DATE?) I don’t understand.
1992 Or is it it 1892? The wood panel itself also looks
old. There’s something written in pencil (maybe an address and a name?)

I did take it out of the frame. It has like a ‘double’ or inner frame (I don’t know what that is called?) Can’t find any info on a J.W Brook? The painting is itself is 14,5 X 20cm. Thank you for any help and keep well

Is it a solid wood panel, or a very thin plywood?

I'd be very surprised if that was 1992... seems like an 1892 hunting scene.

I wouldn't be surprised if both were copies of another work. The OPs certainly does appear to be a copy and by an amateur painter..

Well, that didn't take long. 'Man with White Horse.' Artist unknown. Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum. Must have been widely reproduced and caught (some of) the public's fancy.

Boland, the charm of your copy is in its naiveté. Must have had sentimental value to someone to warrant such elaborate framing.

The one at the Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum says "unknown artist", but there does seem to be a signature in the lower right corner -

I rather like @Boland's version by J.W. Brook better - more impressionistic, but well executed.

I suppose there is no guarantee that the one in the museum is the original. There seems to be little catalog info.

I think it is charming. But why is the horse so small or is that the man is so tall?
    Looks like pony almost.

It does look like a pony. And I don't see the man's weapon.

It looks like a Welsh pony - they have that dished type of face. The Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum (that has one of the versions) is in Aberystwyth, Wales, so there may be a Welsh connection.

Very interesting. Well spotted! That’s definitely a signature. Looks like quite a long name. Odd that they couldn’t find any information on the artist. Still why would they say ‘unknown’. Would have been nice to know if the museum one was the original. Thanks for the reply
