I’d love some help with dating this bag please
Would this likely date to 1920s Flapper era with those tassels?
It’s lined with the softest kid? skin leather and needs some TLC but still a lovely thing. Thanks for any help :)

Great find K. Looks like there is little bead loss. Could be a bit older.
Looks like chamois. Chamois has a soft velvety look and feel, kidskin is more leathery

I would think a tad older too.

It’s lovely isn’t it, yes some beads missing but no large areas. It’s pretty fragile though.
I had assumed the coloured ones were glass but looking under a loupe I think they are all metal if that helps to date it?
I didn’t think of chamois, and admit to having to look it up, I always thought chamois was a type of goat but I now know it’s an antelope! It is very soft so you may well be right. Most of the ones I’ve seen have silk linings.
Interesting both you and @Debora think it could be older - any idea of by how much?
@Ownedbybear I know you scoop these up when you see them!

Or even late Victorian. Frame might be French, and it was probably beaded by she who carried it.

In general... things were getting simpler, less ornate by the flapper era. (And I always think it's interesting that was the era when hem lengths diverged. Before both day and evening were long. The flapper era brought in the fashion of short for day and long for evening which we still follow.)

A chamois is a mountain goat, but chamois leather is mostly made of lamb or sheep. Chamois leather is made from the lower layer of leather, the top layer has been removed to expose a very soft skin.

That’ll teach me to believe what I read on the internet. I’m so gullible :hilarious:

I’ve read that twice and both times my brain has seen ‘beheaded’ not ‘beaded’ . I know the French used to be a little trigger happy with the blade but it’s not even vaguely in context! Brains do bizarre things

Somebody put in a goshawful amount of work on that.

I once found a dated 1890s piece of artwork that was all beads netted the same way. It was cemented to a board at the same time. Bought it for pennies in 2019, and sold it to an antique dealer who "had just the spot on his wall for it." Never made it to the wall: think someone saw it and ponied up on the spot. I didn't want to deal with shipping it, so we all made out.
