Featured Older Sterling Cufflinks Double-Sided Engraved G&H Co.

Hello, I have these for sale on eBay at $40 and sent an offer out for $35 to drum up some business and received a counteroffer for $18. I thought that amount was too low so I declined. I tried to research the mark, "G&H CO." without any matches so I don't know much about them. I thought they looked antique given the design features.

They have an octagon shape, with some engraving, and looks like some worn plating. Each face is 14mm x 12mm (smaller than a dime) and they weigh 4.6 grams each.

Any ideas about the age or maker of these double-sided cuff links with a different looking style/type of fastener? One side is hinged and the other is fixed so you make the hinged side flat to slide through the eye of the cuff and then move it back 90 degrees to hold it in place on the cuff. Is $35 too much to ask?

I'm straying off my patch here, but, anyone else think these would qualify as engine turned/guilloché (without enamel)? My semi-informed opinion is that these are definitely vintage, well-made, solid silver....stick to your guns. You need a cufflink collector to find them.

-- as you're doing -- before accepting an offer that may be too low.

@Debora That's a very good link, thanks. It looks very similar. There's no G evident in the hallmark but then the other link mark not shown is even fainter than the one pictured, so I suppose it's possible the G did not transfer. Thank you. I think you found the mark.

@Debora There's a C. & H CO evident on the cufflinks I have. In the link it says, "cufflinks and pins were marked GCH&CO., GCH or GCH & CO." The image of their mark shows G.C.H.CO –and so I'm now wondering about the position of the ampersand on these being between C. & H that isn't in the link description? Their description says the & comes after the H.

Maybe these links were supposed to be G. & H. & C. CO in another variant of their hallmark?

Personal taste/opinion, but I would take a Sunshine cloth (tarnish remover wipe) & apply it lightly to the edge panels to brighten the ridges, increase contrast. Right now they just look blackened.

I agree that $35 is not too much to ask. They're quite beautiful antiques and meant for fine wear anyway. Add in the engine turned keywords and as Bronwen suggested a light buff. I think the oxidation in the etching makes the design pop, and a polish will make them look more worth the price. Jewelry is one of those places you can get away with removing "patina" to increase value I think.

 

A sunshine cloth won't remove the patina, only the tarnish. And I agree, these beauties need to shine to emphasize the contrast.
