This was my bargain basement find today on the way home from work. According to Google it is a tribal Mayan flute. About 7" tall. I'm thinking it is a souvenir. If you blow into the top of the head it does indeed make flutey sounds quite similar to the ones at the end of 'a day in the life'.

Looks like a touristy design ocarina. The ones people carry as pocket instruments tend to be rather compact. A friend used to make/sell them. His weren't ceramic though. The Day in the Life recording may have used this or pan pipes; I forget which.

Don't think it was a day in the life. Just listened to it. Not sergeant pepper either. I'm going to be awake all night now doing name that song in reverse.

It sure did. Been a while since I heard that one.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Several sites say that the late Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones played an ocarina that was briefly dubbed into some of the party sounds in the Beatles song "Yellow Submarine." I did just play and heard it, but it was very brief.

Was also wondering if it was the woodwind notes at the end of "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" -- but just played that, and I think that was a flute or two.

The first 2 musical instruments I ever played were an Oscar Meyer Wiener Whistle & a Tonette.I can't recall if my parents rented the Tonette or bought it outright for a dollar or two.
PS-You'll notice the advertisement states that the Tonette is 'a real musical instrument'.

I simply have to have one of those hot dog whistles. Amazing!

Ooooh its real. I'll take two please. I love marketing. Not sure they should have described something you stick in your mouth and blow as a wiener either. :p

Oh yeah-back in the first grade,in addition to discussing the previous night's episode of 'Have Gun,Will Travel',we were guffawing over the term 'wiener whistle'.

Big Oscar Mayer factory in my home town, so I saw old wiener whistles all the time at estate sales - 30+ years ago. There are modern ones, too, saw a boxful at the local auction a few years ago. They turn up again, I'll grab 'em and share them out. There was a wienermobile, too, which startled my brother once by being parked in his obscure cul-de-sac.

Weinermobile was here in town last week. Just happened to see it going down the street. Was near the interstate so it may have just stopped for gas. Saw no mention of it in the media so I don't think it was appearing here. This is the 4th time I have seen a Weinermobile by chance. Once got a close up look. Also once saw an ad where they were looking to hire drivers/weiner ambassadors. Seemed like a very interesting job.
