16 inch basket, what can you tell me?

Measures 16" across. There are a few spots on the edges of some kind of damage that are open --but showing the construction. Any ideas on age/origin of this basket? Thanks for taking a look!

 

I can tell you it's 1.33 feet in diameter

Not even sure how to describe it to check comparables. It seems to have some honest age, but value may be just decorative.

That looks like it would have held water with that coating

 

It's a traditional style lacquered wicker basket from Shanxi province, China. It probably dates circa 1930's, but there may be "manufactured antique" examples on the market today.

I went on Ebay and I am seeing "manufactured antique" examples similar to this except with handles and in some cases painted rims.

Just to be clear, were you saying that you thought this one was definitely not one of those?

 

I said "probably" 1930's, because the newer ones can be pretty convincing. I'm a little troubled by the way the "wear" appears almost a little too even. All I can say definitely is it is Chinese, from Shanxi province.
