    A 'grand' piano.:D

I've seen piano stools like this, but without the carving.

Much better pics, thanks! Pics confirm this is an antique or nearly so and confirm that this is not an ancient piece. Also confirm that this was likely made in the UK. AJ is right, this is not chip-carved. Welsh is as good of a thought as any I would have. Members in the UK would have a much better idea of value than I would have here in the US.

I was thinking a sewing stool is more likely, they didn't always have backs.
Piano benches were usually wider, and I think it's unlikely that they'd have side rails? The pianist needs more freedom of movement.

Verybrad Off topic do you mind me asking. Do you think Lewis Wetzel was a homicidal maniac or a product of the time. when I lived in Scotland I asked why a film had not been made of him, the mere fact he could load his gun while running flat out (No one could do it then or today) is crying out for a film

While I had heard of Wetzel, I have never given this much thought. Reading up on him now, it seems he may have been a product of his experiences. His family suffered under Indian raids and he was captured and had an early brush with death from one. This, along with prevailing attitudes of the time, probably shaped who he became. I don't think today's sensibilities would tolerate romanticising him in a movie. I think rightly so. This is history that should be learned but not glorified. A movie painting him as a villian would not have the same comercial appeal, nor treat the history with proper respect.
