Hi again.

This is 11" long, 7" wide and 2" tall.

Would you call it MCM?

It's likely just some random hobbyist's ill-considered ashtray and not a priceless creation by a famous abstract artist who, fed up with the commercial art world, finally abandoned painting and turned instead to the natural beauty of wood in the workshop...... right?

It's definitely more sculptural than utilitarian-primitive but powerful.I prob would've grabbed it.
I would however guess a professional crafts/art person would've had more even accurate chisel marks.I agree with you,a gifted amateur-perhaps they eventually honed their craft into something great ?

Au Contraire, mon ami! There's plenty of evidence of excellent control in that gouging...I believe it looks exactly as the artist meant for it to appear. Also, it surely ain't an ashtray, eh?

 

I don't see it-it's halfway there,unfinished ? There's been some nice woodwork done in the last 70 years.

 

Yah, shure...yubetcha! Y'all are some stripe of a perfectionists, Bosco...that's offered with a good measure of admiration; I am familiar with the type to the point of contempt, as I are one meself.
The Japanese have a phrase:
"In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete" in nature. It is prevalent in many forms of Japanese art."*
My first exposure to the concept was maybe 60 years ago, at Leonard's knee...at the time I thought it was all BS. I had no love for imperfect goods...but over the years have come to accept an' appreciate imperfection in hand crafted items, especially Asian. I confess to being selective, though...I've no room for such in myself...or those I love. Kinda does get inna way of relationships, an' I pay heavy dues on that insufferance from time to time. I won't hold it against you, good sir.
PS: do you possess the obviously perfect wooden item you've pictured?

If the artist's intention is captured in the piece-it's Wabi,if I don't see Wabi in the work it's not,is it art,craft,sublime composition,beautiful accident ?

 

Together 'wabi-sabi' embraces the idea of aesthetic appreciation of aging, flaws, and the beauty of the effects of time and imperfections.

fits me perfectly

 

One thing I can say about Wabi Sabi is-if I saw this bench at a garage sale I'd chain
myself to it.
