    Here's an etsy.com store that sells reproduction samplers. This one is not dissimilar.

    In Latin, the I and J are the same letter. In English of this period spellings weren't standardized. I can easily see one being omitted, since children of the period were often educated a bit in Latin as well as English. I sometimes pop out in words that are in the language I learned them in last, especially if I'm tired, so I can easily see a smaller girl doing the same with her sampler.

    A double S sure did. I think it was a carryover from Fraktur. (fancy written German )
