Google image search wants it to be a pistol cleaning rod, which I doubt.
A word search for sack needle yields nothing that looks like it. I wanna know how to use a sack needle, which I hope it is. It's ~6 1/4" long, made of ~3/16" steel rod. Thanks for lookin'!

Pistol cleaning rod. A small piece of cloth is inserted in the slot , soaked with cleaning fluid and used to clean the barrel. A sack needle which they used to sew up feed sacks after they were filled looks just like a needle but with a large slot for heavier thread.

Thanks, all...I'm familiar with firearms cleaning tools. I'll admit the similarity here, but for cleaning pistol barrels I can see no need for the point on this tool...hence my doubt.

Alternatively, I'm dead-wrong an' my example is indeed a cleaning rod; why, pray, the point? I don't get it...

I had breakfast with an old friend this morning...he has been an FFL dealer for decades, an' there's very little about modern an' vintage firearms he doesn't know. He laughed when I told of my opinion about it being a sack-needle...an' said straight up, it's a cleaning rod.
Thus ends another in a long saga of my misunderstandings about stuff. If I were a bit smarter, I wouldn't parade my ignorance quite so publicly, but...

He's my size, 'tho somewhat lighter; 6'4", 205#...so where d'ya get little, komo? Sounds condescending, to me.
An' no, the point wasn't discussed.

I agree with you. While it resembles a cleaning rod, that sharp tip makes me think it really is a splicing needle

Seconded. A cleaning rod wouldn't need to push a hole in fabric.

So, u get this pal of yours , who you consider to be an expert .....
& your major concern is not addressed.......... or even brought up !

So ya......maybe my tone was a bit flippant towards your pal...... because I was anticipating an explanation to a major ' sticking point ' that has been brought up in this discussion by you as well as others......

    Condescending I was not !!

the Makarov cleaner does present with a tiny pointed end......but also a slot big enuf to easily tread a cloth....... thanks @TallCakes

I see a big difference from the rod @wlwhittier presents us with.

It may be a gun rod.....but so far I remain unconvinced........:p

I had looked at this yesterday, and refrained from adding my worthless 2 cents to the thread, but since Komo has tagged me.........

My thinking was as a tool for deep buttoning furniture. I don't think it is frearms related personally.

See, I told you it was worthless......

    a real no no !!
