This was part of my booty today. Looks famille rose or in the style of. It doesn't have the usual subtle pastel colours of famille rose so does this indicate a later piece, say 20th century or is it just something that I've not encountered before? There is no glaze inside the top rim about 6mm down. Diameter is ~95mm

could that mean there was once a lid?

Strangely enough I bought this lid on the same stall thinking it was the lid from something much larger. A ginger jar perhaps. Just loved the little characters on it and was going to put it on my mantel piece as a standalone. I was going to post it here as a joke and tried it on top out of interest...

Thank you. I bought it on the same day not realising it was connected. I spent 20 minutes trawling through the stall looking for its bottom which was in my basket.

I once bought a Royal Worcester biscuit jar from an ebay seller. Then I noticed a small plate in the small pattern listed by the same seller and bought that. Turns out it was the underplate for the jar! Happy to have a complete and pristine set -- lid, jar and underplate painted by Edward Raby who was a well-known Worcester painter.

This don't look correct to me at all. I don't think this is chinese made

It looks similar to a Chinese Chupu / kat mau - a lidded porcelain soup-bowl.

But the handle/knob on the top of the lid is all wrong. No chupu would have a little figural head like that on it...

    Cute piece, regardless.

Okay thanks for the info and new search terms. I think maybe a later decorative piece early 20th C. I'm still in two minds whether top an bottom are a true match as the decor style is so different. Maybe there were two very similar pieces and they got swapped for breakage or other reason. Or maybe it is supposed to have two contrasting styles.

It smacks of canton/famille rose to me.

Here's an actual kat-mau, as a comparison. This is from my collection:

As you can see, they're higher and more "oval" than "circular" like what you have. And the lid has an indented, circular knob on top (I've never seen one without that knob).

    They're old-fashioned soup-bowls, traditionally used for birds'-nest soup.
