Italian Majolica Apothecary Jar - Vintage or Antique ????

I've just agreed to purchase a majolica apothecary jar, which I believe may be Italian.

The seller had advertised it as 'vintage' , possibly because the base bears the written date(?) '1984'.
However, despite my very limited knowledge of such items, I have the suspicion that it is possibly genuinely old and what is inscribed on the base is merely a 'red herring' so to speak.
As the price was fairly low, I thought that it was a fairly safe bet.

Anyway - I'd be grateful to hear what you guys think about this piece.

Thanks in advance for any assistance !

Hello Icaraus. Welcome to the Forum.
Sincere thanks for your assistance in helping solve my problem !! Very pleased to hear that the jug is indeed old. Now I'll have to consider what, if anything, can be done about removing the scrawl on the base of the jug.
However, unfortunate about the foxes, though.

Incidentally, are you able to say if the Latin(?) inscription translate to 'Oil of Foxes', or is it perhaps just the design of the jug that suggests it's original use ?

Once again - many thanks !

Hi I’m unsure of the Latin inscription. I think it’s just the design of the jug that suggests use sorry I can’t be of further help.
