Don't refinish-don't.Unless you're a museum level expert restorer or forger,i'd leave it be aside from stabilizing it.

I am curious about the lock on the door where i assume the slop jar/chamber pot would go? Why would that need a lock ? He didnt want people to see his poop ? :)

It may be that the “carcass” of the piece was adaptable to more than one function, ie a Beau Brummell AND a washstand, depending.

We’ll, I’m glad to say I learned something today. I had never heard of a furniture piece called a Beau Brummell before.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve been blown away by the quantity and quality of information shared

Is your intention to improve & sell? Or improve & use?

I’m conflicted with what to do with this now. Initially the plan was to re-purpose as a drinks cabinet with a small baize insert inside to use as a cards table. However…. Now I’ve been given this new information I feel a little uncomfortable doing anything to it or even using it and perhaps it would benefit from some form of professional restoration with a view to sell.

What you have is a modified bedside cabinet which enclosed a potty and would have originally had cutout compartments for jug basin and 3 or 4 other accessories.incl a waste bowl . appears to be mahogany veneered on secondary timber cant detect but usually pine or oak (you decide) with cock beaded drawers and door...hardware appears to be original and in period c1790 to 1810
