Purchased my own "potential" silver bonanza at a local auction. Or is it a bust? Yes, I did have a chance to preview but this is the auction photo on-line. If you wanted, you could call and leave an absentee bid. Just from seeing this photo, what looks good? How much would you pay for the entire lot?

Clue...There is only ONE obvious silver item. Everyone had a chance to look over the loot before bidding started.

Was this lot a bounty or bust?

Way out of my depth here but... I would assume the brush handle was sterling, especially given the repoussé work.

There's more than one piece I wonder about. The brush isn't one of them.

The candlesticks look good to me, quite fine, one has a dent in it at the top, sometimes plated ones seem thick and heavy. But I might be totally wrong.

My guess for the obvious silver one would also be the brush. Otherwise, without being able to peruse the lot, I probably would not go more than $75.00. Even so, looks like there could be potential bounty. Besides the brush, the candlesticks, coffee pot, baby cup, and that flatware serving piece look interesting.

The silver thimble jiggers are sometimes sterling and even if not they go for a pretty penny.

Seconded - and those trivets are always plated. I've found one sterling trivet, non-folding and a thin layer of metal over glass, in about 20 years. The other 999 were plated. I'd love to get a good gander at those candlesticks; the tops are made like the real deal. The brush looks like white metal to me, and I'm always suspicious of baby cups. I've run into both kinds too often. The coffee pot I just never believe until given evidence to the contrary.

    Here's my guesses:

    0-1.jpeg

    1. The candlesticks look great to me, that would be my best bet for being genuine based onthe tone and the thin edge at the top. I would expect these to either be fully hollow, hollow at the top with a weighted bottom, or fully weighted.

    2. This little folding device looks plated.

    3. This ornate utensil looks nice to me; I would give it a 50/50 chance of silver vs. silverplate.

    4. This little piece has the right tone, but not enough info for me to make a guess.

    5. I would love the teapot to be silver. I wish I could see the handle side as I rely a lot on that for clues. As it sits I would guess plated based on the tone of the metal near the handle I circled.

    6. Tone looks wrong here, but I've been fooled plenty before. I would guess plated.

    7. Tough call on this handle, to me the metal that I circled in red looks quite thick, I would personally expect a thinner edge if real silver. Who knows, but my guess would be plated.

    8. A few mixed signals on this little baby cup. Positive is a thin handle, but the relief image on the side looks stamped. If I had to guess I would say plated.

    9. This looks like a sterling thimble shot glass like this one:

    10. The creamer has a nice thin spout that I would expect from sterling. Hard to say as I can't see it all, but 50/50 for silver is my guess.

    11. Everything in here is a "bonus gamble" when you bid on this lot. Just one or two of those plates being sterling would quickly turn this into a treasure pile.

Seeing it in person definitely would change my bidding strategy. Based on just this photo I would realistically try to be $75 - $100 max and pray something in group 11 is real.
