Auction house data says this was an 18th century English prie-dieu chair. Then another sources said this came over with French fur trappers to the Great Lakes region where it was updated with birch quill work from the Mi'kmaq Natives Americans. I read prie-dieu chairs weren't popular until the 19th century. Love the chair either way but trying to learn which theories are most accurate. I'm not an expert but really enjoy the hunt for the historical information. Thank you in advance for your insights!

the Mi'kmaq certainly did the quill work on this chair.....but they lived nowhere near the Great Lakes..

and would have had to have the chair in hand to do the exacting quill work...

Trade between the 1st Nations living along the St. Lawrence river , as well as fur trappers and new comers like the French & English was a bustling affair......but I'd suspect the Mi'kmaq.....had it first.
    imo

The first chair Komokwa listed from Invaluable went for $1500 (which seems reasonable to my amateur eyes). But those more elaborate ones-god only knows ? I did a very brief search but couldn't find any others for sale (Christies & Sothebys prob has some past sales info).
    They are truly spectacular !

18th century English I can buy. The Prie-dieu pieces I know about are kneelers, not chairs, so that's as far as I'll go. Pretty awesome piece of work by somebody though!

Would think English rather than French with the quill work done here.
