Hello all! I am happy to have just found your forum and look forward getting to know you all over time.

I have had some cloisonne in the past come in to my shop but it was always that new mass produced stuff. So I have never bothered to research cloisonne before. I had a piece come in today that seems quite legit but I really do not know. It seems to have some genuine age. Any hep with an ID or possible value would be greatly appreciated. It stands about 8ish inches tall.

It's definitely older just from the colors. I'll let the experts take it further. The blue inside usually tells me it's Chinese, but since the base isn't enameled the jury is still out. For me, anyway.

Japanese - in my humble opinion.

Japanese and early 20th century, the style was associated with Kyoto I seem to recall. They do OK, but not very valuable, need to be in good condition otherwise not easy to sell.

I disagree. If you look at some of the closeups, this is very sloppy and poorly done. Enamel not at all precise. Authentic Japanese cloisonné of that era is known for very exact care and precision.

I initially thought Japanese with those florals but last comment does make you think. Chinese of a later period done in the style of Japanese perhaps.

This is Japanese. The swirls are a lot tighter and the flowers more geometric.

Edit edit. Just had another look and I really don't know. I've not had enough exposure to the stuff to know.

I don’t know where your example is from? I find it best to go to reliable sources. Museum collections are best, but don’t always have examples of what you are looking for. So try instead liveauctioneers, searching for “Japan meiji cloisonne tremont”. Tremont auction house are a smallish auction house, so don’t usually have Christie’s level blockbuster pieces. But they are run by the guy who appraises Asian art on PBS US antiquesroadshow. So he does know what he is talking about, and if he describes something as Japanese meiji (1868-1912) then it probably is, unlike a lot of other small auction houses on liveauctioneers.

Anyway here is but one example of a piece about the same size as OP piece. By all means check other examples, and I think you’ll agree that Meiji Japan cloisonné is very high quality compared to OP piece. First one Tremont example (which sold for only $150), then OP example:

I would guess Chinese rather than Japanese. I don't know much about cloisonne, but OP's vase is likely older (turn of 20th c perhaps). I wonder if the base metal is copper (that verdigris on the interior?) or brass.
