The White House has some of the best examples of furniture in the nation, not only American but European furniture as well, it's really a Museum. It wasn't always that way............
"Jacqueline Kennedy arrived and was appalled to discover the White House was furnished with reproductions from a New York department store, McLaurin said. She created the historical association, the advisory committee and a curator to help the White House collect and exhibit only the best, McLaurin said."

Yes, that was the beginning, we were DAMN LUCKY she came along and set up a process to restore & recover some fabulous historical pieces that had been lost due to foolish govt. decisions.
Jackie's work continues on, it will never be "finished", and that's a good thing.

Meanwhile, Melania's 'issue' is cyber-bullying. Her promotion of it has been very successful, don't you think?

James, you are right - we are lucky. When the restoration was in progress, they contacted my FIL who was a collector of fine Lancaster and Chester County pieces and Philadelphia pieces. He contributed 3 pieces that are currently displayed. I remember a couple of his friends did, too. If I remember correctly they were Israel Sack and Joe Kendig.

Yeah, a couple of legendary dealers in American furniture, Sack in NYC & Kindig who specialized in Pennsylvania furniture.
I would add that the State Dept. has some killer examples of american furniture as well from 1750-1825.
The Diplomatic Reception Rooms are among the most beautiful rooms in the world, particularly " The Martha Washington Ladies' Lounge"
