Salt and pepper cruet. Art deco?

I picked up this set along side the elves on geese. Perhaps it was part of a house clearance. I'm think art deco period or at least pretending to be. The bungs seem to be desicated rubber maybe.

 

Why do the lines look like they were painted on after the crazing occurred? Like them anyway.

I love stripping off wallpaper in old houses and seeing the time capsule of fashion underneath. My gran's house still had the original bakelite light switches in it right up until she passed away in 1993. The toilet cistern was near the ceiling with a big long chain. Everything was dated right down to the food mixer and icing bag she used to make fairy cakes on Sunday when we went round for tea. Oh and the black and white television! The shed was full of broken valve teles and the lawn mower was the type that you pushed. Sorry you set me off on a nostalgia trip then.

 

I'm getting some odd Google results for Memphis cruet.

 

A pair of salt and pepper shakers are not called a cruet in the US. A cruet is a bottle for oil or vinegar.

 

Some decent tight fitting corks might serve you better than those decrepit & dying rubber (??) plugs!!!

 

Yes but I wasn't sure whether to lose them or not as they seem to be original fixtures.

 

I think the term covers all accoutrements this side of the pond.

Flemish is Dutch. We have an official 'Language Union', a Belgium-Netherlands consensus on what is or isn't 'proper' Dutch.
Both countries know different types of Dutch, of which Flemish is one. Flemish is also spoken in the Netherlands btw, in the southwest.

How about Norwegian? I can't speak or understand it, but I sure heard a lot of it from my grandparents when I was growing up!

I have no problem with Norwegian as a language, Dutch people seem to learn it quite quickly.
But we have more Dutch speakers on the forum than Norwegian speakers, so a firm Dutch base from which we can expand. And we will help the others of course, that goes without saying.

What say you @Dessert58 , I know you have done your utmost to introduce Dutch terms.
More so than I have, I didn't get much further than 'fantjes' (little elephants), which was immediately embraced by other members.

 

Really? I thought it was a dialect that had french mixed in.
