oversized exceptional american brilliant cut tazza - I beleive it is strawberry diamond fan - the quality is mindboggling - I know from the past that hawkes and dorflinger did the pattern because I have pieces - but don't know who else may have done this pattern - the base and the stem are as masterful as the bowl itself... large - much larger than an average compote/comport - measures 9 1/2" diameter and 7 1/2" tall - appreciate any insights... ccut.jpg ccut2.jpg ccut4.jpg ccut3.jpg ccut5.jpg

That is really beautiful! Do you know for sure that it is American? I've never seen a base like that on an ABC piece. And this pattern has been reproduced in eastern Europe (I think). Not trying to pick it apart because it is so stunning, but just might not be American.

I'm not that familiar with cut glass/crystal. From images I'd call it a compote, as a tazza is typically very shallow and flat. Cut ABP glass would have a slight florescence under UV as it has manganese, same as EAPG.

I know that Libbey did strawberry-diamond-fan, but as Ola mentioned, the base on yours is uncommon. The FB group may be your best bet for info.

There are several examples of Strawberry Diamond Fan shown in Martha Louise Swan's American Cut and Engraved Glass. Not this shape but by several different makers (both marked and unmarked.)She also refers to this design as a traditional one from before the brilliant period.

I realize that ABP folks speak the own language when it comes to their pattern motifs, but from what I gather their strawberry-diamond motif has crosshatched diamonds as in image below, whereas this piece has no crosshatching:

is that why some patterns are called strawberry diamond fan and some are just called strawberry fan ? the strawberry just being the diamonds without hatching like the texture of a strawberry ???

unfortunately many folks simply don't discern a difference in subtle motif details and use the same name. ABP motifs don't always track that closely with EAPG, which I understand a bit better. In EAPG a large diamond motif like this might be called sawtooth, but also simply diamond; then adding the fan motif might result in a pineapple or strawberry pattern. Tho' with EAPG the strawberry pattern also often includes similar crosshatch detailing with the diamond motif.

I'm fairly certain that this piece is not ABCG. ABC is a type of glassware that I tried hard to learn about when I was still selling, but it was really difficult because there were no books at the library and the books you could buy were upwards of $50 each (not my price range). So my knowledge is spotty. There was a woman on the old ebay boards who was the ABCG expert. She helped me a lot! But I think she passed several years ago. During the 1980s there were a lot of imported cut glass wares from Europe (I was told eastern Europe). It was very popular to collect and to display because it is beautiful. That's what I'm thinking this piece is. It just doesn't have the characteristics of ABCG. I've looked at as many old catalogs as I could find and have never seen this shape or this base. I respect your tenacity in tracking down information and look forward to hearing what you find out.

when it was made.....it came out so stunning that they dare not make a 2nd one...

    or

when it was made....everyone who touched it.....cut themselves , so they decided not to make any more killer glass design !!

Yes, I'm grasping at straws here .......:(
