Featured 1655 ENGLISH MULE CHEST

I JUST BOUGHT THIS TODAY IN NEW YORK IT IS DATED 1655 AS YOU CAN SEE. CAN ANYONE TELL MORE ABOUT IT?

 

Wow. That's in beautiful condition for that age. What a treasure.

 

I am not a furniture person, but those who are will want to see closeups of the hardware (hinges, lock, and any fasteners), as well as the inside of the lid and any views you can get of the joinery (corners, and how the wood is fitted/held together). Such details are important clues in dating furniture.

 

Thank you. Can anyone tell me who might have made it by the date and initials. I believe it was made in Leeds. Would this have been in a wealty house?

 

I think you might want to establish it's genuniely old, rather than a revival piece, before conjecturing as to previous ownership. In addition to the photographs, would you tell us where you bought it and what you were told about it by the seller?

It’s a nice chest, but the feet worry me. Unless they’ve been cut down massively, they’re not showing the wear and rot from centuries of mopped floors. It’s also a bit too squared off and precise for my liking.

 

A mule chest includes drawers under the storage area. Your chest is a coffer chest.

Over a half an inch of wear from the latch.

 

It’s worth noting that these were reproduced in the nineteenth century and this is certainly as old as that. Or at least, it’s components mostly anre. Originals obviously also got repaired and altered.

Those metal screws suggest nineteenth too.
