A purchase from the 50p table.
I know it’s damaged but the fighting Putti ( presumably that’s what they are?) intrigued me. Someone bothered to mend it, albeit badly, so it was loved!
Any ideas of age or maker please? German? Or the meaning of the gold 35 on the base?
    c8cm long and c6cm tall.
Calling @Bronwen  please can you tell me if there is any significance that they are squabbling over a boot?
    Thankyou :)

They are fully clothed, so I don't think putti.
I do think the situation will end in tears.:(:joyful:

I wonder if it was entirely gilded when new.

    Modest Putti?
It does look like someone is going to get clobbered with that boot :hilarious:

Which thing is the boot? I can't make much out. I thought they were fighting over whatever is in the bowl/basket/nest. Eggs? Fruit? Potatoes?

Against my better judgement... I think that's charming.

As has already been noted they're too clothed (& too long in the leg) to be putti. Schoolboys, more like, maybe brothers or best friends. I'm also with AJ in having some trouble making out what's going on. There does seem to be a bird's nest with 3 eggs, situated perilously near the action, but seemingly not the focus of it. And what are all those rectangular things that have been knocked to the ground? Not books. They may be the object of the row & the boot a ready to hand weapon. Boy on top looks very determined.

The figures are wearing long pants. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't meant to be grown men.

Don't boys go into long pants at about the age of 11, when they go off to boarding school? Think a knock down drag out between grown men would not be an amusing subject for the lid of a trinket jar.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

This reminds me of the image on a stereoview in my collection. Taken in about the 1870s by the studio of Jeremiah Gurney, well-known New York photographer.

Here is half of the stereo image! I've never known what it represents. Gurney was well known for theatrical photos, so I assumed it was from a play.

That’s brilliant, there are definite similarities and would explain the slightly odd subject matter.
    Great work @Figtree3 , Thankyou!
