Saw this chest at a resale shop Saturday in Texas. They were about to close so I didn't have much time to examine and I only took these two photos. I haven't found one exactly like it online but from what I've seen I'd say Chippendale style, figured maple, 19th century. The pulls looked to be replaced based on holes on inside of drawers. The lock on one drawer was attached with rose head nails. The four long drawers appear to be graduated from large down to small, which is unusual. Worth going back for another look, or nothing special?

Does look like it has potential. If very old, it looks like the feet and, perhaps, the top have been replaced. Looks like the secondary wood is oak. This usually points toward it being English but I am unsure if this is a hard and fast rule with early furniture. I know just enough about early furniture to get myself in trouble... LOL! May depend on what they are asking for it. Even if 19th century, it is a nicer piece than most factory made Victorian furniture.

Is that curly maple? I wonder if it could be Canadian.

It is maple. I would say more tiger than curly.

Thanks for the replies. The price is right (under $100). What do you think about the drawer configuration? Does that say anything about the age or place of origin? Would that be called "reverse graduated" or is there another term for it?

Maple comes in such a variety of interesting figures.

Can't help with origin, but see what you mean about the drawers being in an interesting order. Usually you have a smaller drawer on the top, going down from there. Here seems to be the opposite!

It is a cool piece. Something about it seems a bit above average.

I went online to check drawer configuration, and to search typed in "antique dresser with carved fan" and started to get some matches, maybe try as a keyword.

If you go back there for another look there may be some small makers marks stamped on the lock mechanisms.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

@mark737 , Did you go back to get it, or decide not to? Inquiring minds want to know.
