Thanks for the new pics. Still leaning toward newer. A few things about it I don't like as to being old. Drawer cockbeading is not real. Looks to be a routed edge rather than an applied bead. There doesn't seem to be any drawer edge wear. Ditto to foot wear. Would not expect a full panel back on an old piece.

And they went a bit too far on one (or more?) of the drawers, the closed top drawer, top left in this photo:

That is something I've seen before on some lower end Indonesian colonial style furniture, but it probably occurs on old style furniture from other countries as well.

Thanks for the opinions. I get it that hand cut dovetails and hand-planed drawer bottoms doesn't mean it's antique, but the nails and screws have me confused. It seems hard to believe whoever made this (in Indonesia or elsewhere) would use antique style nails and screws that would oxidize as they have on this piece. Seems like an awful lot of trouble to make a little, and I assume not very valuable, chest appear antique. And I've searched the internet for anything out of Indonesia that resembles this chest and have found nothing. Who else would make something like this?

I will say that at one of my old auction houses, I had to re-catalogue what was thought to be antique Georgian pieces after further examination. What was consigned to us as an early 19th century chest was 20th century with modifications utilizing earlier pieces (locks, nails, dust boards, panels, feet, etc). English cabinetmakers were the best at it.

Thanks, but again this seems like a lot of bother for a little piece like this. And if you are going to go to all the trouble of reusing antique hardware, why not go all out and make the back and the scratch beading on the drawers look more authentically antique?
