Wandering around the only charity shop we have Chalon-sur-Saone, Burgundy, I spotted this pretty ribbon bow and thought it would make a nice going home to England present for my granddaughter. I couldn’t really look at it properly as I don’t like using a loop, unless I find a discrete corner.

Back ‘ome, with the help of a loop, UV light and telephone camera I found this:
    1
    GDB 10.jpg
    2
    GDB 2.jpg
    3
    GDB 3.jpg
4 UV light showing diamonds as do 25% of diamonds
    GDB 12.jpg
    5 Blue display in sunlight
    GDB 1.jpg
6 Chip of gold missing GDB 6.jpg
    7 Brooch fixation
    GDB 13.jpg
    8
    GDB 7.jpg
    9 Pin catch
    GDB 8.jpg
    10 Hinge
    GDB 9.jpg

I know less about jewellery than I know about any other collectable, and I know precious little about those.

From the evidence I think the brooch is rolled gold based on the chip on photo 6. Photographs 4 and 5 suggest that they could be 4-diamonds about 2mm diameter i.e. 0.01 ct. The hinge, pin and fastener, point to anytime between 1930 and 1970.

If I am correct then it might not be the right time to give it to a nine-year-old. How wrong is my analysis?

    All comments welcomed. Thank you.

I’m seeing a rather generic gold-tone costume brooch design.

I don’t put much value in UV diamond detection, but that said, diamonds typically are not set in non precious metals

    sorry

others may disagree with my assessment though

    kyratango Bug jewellery addiction!

Agree with JewelryPicker, a generic costume piece, the area shown is the gilding coating pealing from base metal not rolled gold.
What fluoresce under UV is the glue! No diamonds here but glued rhinestones.
Your granddaughter will be delighted with your charming bow!:)

A late vote from me for a pretty costume piece.

Am with the others, cute costume.
As kyra said, it is the glue that fluoresces. You can see blotches of glue light up very nicely around the 'stones'.
Since many clear stones as well as other materials fluoresce, fluorescence is not the go-to test for diamonds.

One clue: Diamonds are never glued on jewellery, they are set in different ways, but without glue.

I'd have figured it for 1980s costume jewelry right off the bat, but I used to look at a LOT of jewelry. A small child will think it's a treasure.
