Featured Vintage unusually large family crest ring maybe Scottish any ideas about the crest?

Discussion in 'Jewelry' started by Anyiquesbyjewels, Aug 1, 2023.

  1. Recently purchased this unusually large 9ct signet ring. It’s literally huge. 20g 9ct gold. I have attached some photos the hallmark dates it to 1979.

it was bought in Scotland and on the family crest there is the rampant lion. And also a bird.
I was hoping to establish what the family crest it is

I know that around this period there did exist a fashion of faux heraldery so this might such a thing. The engraving/embellishment on the sides of the ring look Celtic too.

If anyone would like to give there opinion on the rings origin or family crest I’d be grateful

    Thanks

This is how a seal made with this ring would look.

I also did find this site which looks like it could be quite large....as they look like they have most registered Coats of Arms in Scotland....it's a "rabbit hole I dare not go down" lest I not come out too soon!!!:happy: But I wish you luck and fun in your search!!

yes indeed one could get lost down that rabbit hole for a few hours. It was bought in Glasgow so I’ll start there :)

Thank you to Bronwen and Aquitaine for blowing it up <3

You have to search for one of the aristocratic families, with that coronet.
Can anyone see how many pearls the coronet has? The pearls are the little balls around the top. The number of pearls indicate the rank.
If you know the rank, you can narrow down the search.

The ring is probably so large because it includes the coronet and eagle(?) crest on the top.
I don't know the English word, in Dutch it is called a "helmteken", which translates as a helmet sign or mark. An aristocratic coat of arms consists of a shield and a "helmteken".
Many signet rings only show the coat of arms, even if the family has a "helmteken".

That narrows it down considerably.:) It is an earl's coronet, and there aren't too many earls in Scotland.

In that case it could be English. For which town or city?

    Fabulous ring!
Correctly identifying Coats of Arms and Heraldry in general can be a complete nightmare. I’ve had several pieces ( not like this sadly!) to research and well and truly got stuck down the rabbit hole. Good luck!

If you need help finding the city, maybe you can post a photo of the marks.
