Assumed faux pearls. Any idea where/when? Guessing 30s-50’s American? Closer to 40’s? Came in a bag lot I bought. Not sure if a marriage or set but darn close looking. No marks. I would not assume faux pearls. I cannot tell from the photos. Try taking pictures of them in natural lighting. The ones in the bracelet appear to be aging appropriately for natural pearls. Just too hard to tell from photos anyway. What do they feel like on your teeth? If anything, one may be real and the other not, but both may be real.

Perhaps a photo on a white background that is in focus will help.

It looks like an 800 mark. Gold wash over .800 silver maybe? I thought the color rubbing off in spots probably meant costume, but it might not be.

I see what you’re talking about but I think it’s just a bit of texture rather than a mark. I stuck it under the loupe earlier to double check.

I’m either incompetent when it comes to pearls on teeth or every time I’ve tried they have been fake. I never feel anything that noticeably gritty/rough or whatever it’s supposed to be. I did look at these a lot closer today and I didn’t notice any of the normal wear that old fake pearls show so maybe they are real. I bought my mother a pearl necklace at Macys when I was very young. Next time I visit I’ll give them a tooth rub. They can be my “control” I guess.

Now that you mention it I can make myself see 800 in the photo but I’m 99.99800% sure it’s just some texture in the metal.

    J. Dagger, I completely understand you when it comes to testing pearls by teeth. When I did it first, I just didn't know what to expect although antiquers folk had verbally explained it to me. But explanation is one thing and real testing is another :) What I found out is that the feeling of grittiness (if pearls are real) is so distinct that you cannot mix it with anything else. It reminded me of my childhood when we were at the beach and I regularly tasted sand :joyful:

@J Dagger , I still have exact same difficulties when trying to test pearls with my teeth! I learned to go by sight first and tooth rub second. My canine tooth may be more accurate than my front teeth.

Half my lifetime ago, I was at a popular foreign market where strands of pearls were being sold in bulk for shockingly cheap. The lil' ole Asian lady vendor put a lighter flame to the bottom of a strand! She told me, "See. Real Pearls Do Not Burn!" and I was discovered she was right. While this was likely a strand she used for tourist trade to prove her wares were real, it upset my psyche so much to see that, I couldn't even walk around her stall after that! :jawdrop: So yes, I've been struggling to learn the fine art of the tooth test ever since! :joyful::smuggrin:

Can anyone tell - are the gold bead-like parts made of rolled gold?

After another look at the pearls, I do think they are all real. The little slight differences in shape are consistent with a lower grade of pearls. Can you see that, J Dagger? It's only my wild guess, please let known what you discover.
