    What are these worth?

I'm looking to buy these to restore them then resell. There's a little veneer damage and looks like some scuffs and dings on the legs. Keep in mind I'm near NYC, we buy and sell at a little bit of a premium.

What a piece of furniture is worth in one state is vastly different in another. We don't generally provide values and especially prior to the refinishing photos, which I will like to see when you're done.

In my southern state, I would only pay about $5-10 each for these in this condition at a yard sale, $10 at a thrift. More likely, I'd find them by the curb side. Like in NYC. :)

Good luck with your restoration project and I'm sure these will sell. They appear to be from the beginning of the MCM period, rather than the height of it.

Just one is listed for $695 on this mc furniture website :woot:

The seller wants $130 for the pair.... It boogles my mind that somebody down south would only be able to pay $10.

I hope you can acquire the same when you are done.

    Edited to add:
Not sure why you'd ask the value from real live people, when you already found it on a website that doesn't actually offer it?
One thing for sure - I'd never lie to you like that website! ;)

Trust but verify. My guess is that website includes the price of shipping in the final price, I'd probably get closer to $300 for this set if I get then back to 9.9/10 condition. Considering it looks to just be a clean up and spot repair, I can probably double my money in just a few hours.... I hope

I only asked as a double check because Im not really super familiar with the name brands making popular pieces from that time period.

They are well made and quite attractive. They do seem to be in great condition. IF you live in or near a city, you might see $300 for the pair .Its really hard these days to say what anything is worth,it literally varies from state to state. Ultimately, they are only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Welp we'll see how much I get for them! Material cost will be low as I already pretty much have everything I'll need. I'd have loved to get these for $50 or less but I think mcm is really trending right now and these should go fast for a decent return.

While not from a big name maker, these have the look that is sought after. You are in a unique market that most of us can't relate to. Don't use the very high end websites as a final arbiter but do trust your instincts about mark up and making money and you should do fine. It is OK to shoot for the moon as long as you are conservative in what you risk.

It's not that "somebody down south would only be able to pay $10" but more the point of, not many people are in the market for old brown wood furniture down south. I think they'd be a hard sell at $130.00 here, especially lacking the classic tapered legs that were signature to the MCM style in later years. Younger generations are very into repainting everything brown wood now.

I recently posted a 1920s table I picked up for ten bucks at a thrift store in good shape to show the interesting bracing on the underside. I only bought it because it was $10 and I had the perfect place to put it. Am not much in the market to buy and sell anything anymore. Downsizing. Almost done.

We live in a unique area of high metropolitan growth. There is SO MUCH STUFF COMING IN FROM EVERYWHERE - being thrifted, consigned, thrown away, just what one would expect to see when there is a vast amount of people moving in and out of a large area with building construction exploding! This has caused an ongoing glut in the market of used stuff. Additionally, New Orleans is an old port city, so there has never been any lack of incoming shipments of stuff.

This is 100% spot on, thanks Brad.

They have a fabulous look, but the one seems to have water stains on the top. Curious, do you really have a trick to permanently get that kind of damage off of veneer? I know some temporary tricks, but would be curious to know about a fix that really lasts with water stains.

Hope it works out for you. They have great bones and a handsome look.

I'm planning to strip down to bare wood on the carcass, so I'll see how they look after I hit it with 180grit. If the stains are there, I'll try to lift them out and if not, I'll need to blend them in with staining pens.

National Furniture of Mount Airy, and Mount Airy Furniture were two separate companies until around 1974 when it became National Mount Airy. Your nightstands are by National, probably made in 60's. They are a nice, sought-after MCM style, but as Brad said, National is not a top tier maker with famous designers like a Dunbar or Knoll. Here in Texas, you might get $250-$300 for the pair in a good refinished condition. You could get $600 in a market like NYC, DC or SF, if willing to wait a while for the right buyer. One thing to keep in mind, established retail websites are going to get higher prices than private parties posting on Craigslist or Facebook. And the prices you see on retail store websites are likely asking prices and items could have sold for less.

Sold for $400 in less than a day. Could have probably gotten $450 in a week or two but overall I'm happy.

My image posting app isn't working but they look great. I'll try to upload something.

Congrats. That seems about right for NYC area. Yes, probably could have gotten more if willing to wait, but time and space are money, so often it's better to get $400 today vs. $600 in six months.

Thanks!! It's so hard to come by mcm around here at reasonable prices such that a profit can be made. I'm hoping I'll be able to do more because this was really fun. My favorite job yet, and one of my most profitable.
