This was at a recent garage sale, was thinking this was maybe a "made in India" valance, was puzzling over it, asked the owner if he knew anything, and he said, "You can have that for free." So I figured, take it home and figure it out later. The appliques seem to be made of some kind metal. Is this a modern piece? 44 x 19" . Thanks. from the back:
Could have been used for a wedding ceremony. Pink is in the red colour family, an auspicious colour, often used for weddings.
Thanks, AJ. So like a valance for some kind of cermony? When I first picked it up at the garage sale I thought it was some kind of shawl or part of a dress, but it is definitely a valance for over a window. Apologies I didn't get a full photo of the entire back of the piece. There is a 2 inch area the length of it that a curtain rod would go through. I feel like I've seen newer items like this, from 30 years ago or so, but then started 2nd guessing and when he said, "just take it for free", figured nothing lost, nothing gained. Could this be antique? I *think* the material is silk, silk-like in any case. No idea what I'm even going to do with it, but might treat it differently if it might be an antique. Keep the excellent thoughts coming!
Or a canopy, maybe. No, I think your gut feeling was right. Still, pretty, and I'm sure it will sell.
