I found these last week at the local thrift store I go to - I think the first is a woodblock(?) print by Kitagawa Utamaro - but a regular buyer of my art finds said he couldn't seem to find another with a pencil signature - is this normal? Rare? A fake?
I found the prices for his work range from $100s to $1,000s - it would be great if this is real!
PS - 1st photo I took with my phone flash but it looked too dark/orangish so 2nd photo I took by open door with sunlight shining on it.

The 2nd one is a beautiful carved wood...mirror or photo holder(?) with 2 doors. The screws on back holding the metal attachment to hang it has 2 old style slot screws so I'm hoping that was added mid century? and this may have some age to it?
Where is it from & what is it for - mirror or photo frame?
PS - I've seen these before but they were much bigger, which is why I'm wondering if it could be a photo frame (but why would you "close the doors" on a loved one's photo so it couldn't be seen?) - it measures 17" H x 18" W

Thank you for any information; it is appreciated!

I know I saw it - want to be sure it's real/worth it before I remove it & replace matting.

Not sure if Utamaro would have signed this 'Utamaro' in 18th century Japan-maybe added by a later dealer ? Is that pencil signed on the mat board or actual print itself ?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Is the print DOUBLE matted???? To me, from the pictures, it's hard to tell..........

I think the term you are looking for is Jharokha
You can try Jhaorkha with shutters.

To me the carving doesnt look very Indian, may be south east asian, but not Indian. Jharokas are normally popular in North India and the carving is more akin to South Indian. confusing.

He wouldn't have. So not signed, but probably added by a collector or dealer.
I agree, it looks South Indian. Could even be Sri Lankan Hindu.

Might the carved wooden frame/window be intended for use in a "pooja/puja mandir", a home shrine for a Hindu deity?

Those are usually 3D, like a box or cabinet, sometimes open-fronted, sometimes with doors. Mine is open, no doors.
