Maker? - U.S. sterling jam spoon

    I picked up this 5.6" jam/relish (?) spoon at a yard sale this past weekend for 50 cents. It was totally blackened by tarnish.
    Stamped "Sterling", with a "48", and a lion passant? dog? horse?
    Any ideas as to to the maker?

    I think it likely that this is the (partial) mark of JB & SM Knowles of Rhode Island. The lion is rampant, not passant and the mark is missing the shield with the letter K that the lion is facing. The pattern is Argo.

    Excellent! Thank you. Now I see the two arms of the K.
