They were in a job lot, they're quite light weight and feel kind of organic. The necklace is about 34 inches long with no clasp, just tied in a knot.

I recall if you scratch a piece of jet on an unglazed ceramic surface, it will leave a brown streak. There is also vulcanite which looks very similar to jet.

They're faceted like 30s bakelite but don't weigh much... jet sounds right.

That looks like jet which has somewhat decomposed.

They look somewhat wooden. Are they cold to the touch?

Not particularly cold, they've been sat untouched since last night and are just slightly colder than my hand. They do feel like some kind of wood which is why I thought maybe bog oak, but I have nothing to compare them with unfortunately

I think they could be wood, not bog oak, but regular wood. Black wooden beads were also worn in mourning, just like black glass (French jet) and jet beads.

They look 19th century, so they were probably worn and handled a lot. Nice to feel history.

Just to let you all know I asked on Beadman facebook page and he reckons they are casein c1930s, which has surprised me as I was convinced they weren't plastic :wideyed:
